“From the beginning God made them male and female; for this reason a man shall leave his mother and father and be joined to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.” Matthew 19: 5-6
Matrimony is defined as "the sacrament by which a baptized man and a baptized woman bind themselves for life in a lawful marriage and receive the grace to fulfill their responsibilities as a married couple."
Marriage is common to all cultures in all ages. It is, therefore, a natural institution, something common to all mankind. At its most basic level, marriage is a union between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation and mutual support and love.
In the Catholic Church, however, marriage is more than a natural institution. At the wedding feast of Cana (John 2:1-11) marriage was elevated by Christ himself to become one of the seven sacraments. A marriage between two Christians, therefore, has a supernatural element as well as a natural one.
Any registered parishioner of St. John’s who is contemplating a wedding in our church should contact the rectory and make an appointment to speak to one of the priests to discuss the matter. This should be done at least six months before the (planned) wedding date.
Weddings at St. John’s are usually scheduled for Saturdays (the latest time on Saturday would be 2:30pm); but other days can be considered. Specific dates and times cannot be discussed until an engaged couple meets with a priest.
